What is the ASTM A53?

ASTM A53 standard specifies requirements for the fabrication of black as well as hot-dipped galvanized welded and seamless steel pipe for general fluid transfer and mechanical structural purposes.

erw a53 gr.b steel pipe

Seamless and welded steel pipes from DN 6 to 650 mm with wall thicknesses according to ASTM A53 Tables X2.2 and X2.3, as well as galvanized steel pipes.

ASTM A53 Type and Grade

Pipe Type

Type F:

Furnace Butt-Welded Pipe - Continuously welded pipe. Produces multiple lengths of pipe, which are then cut into individual lengths and welded by mechanical pressure created by hot rolls.

Note: Type F is not available with flanges

Type E:

resistance-welded pipe. A longitudinal butt joint in a single length, or in a plurality of lengths from a crimped casing, then cut into individual lengths, having a longitudinal butt joint, wherein the merger is produced by heat gained from the resistance of the current in the circuit in which the pipe is situated, and by the application of pressure.

Note: Typе E is furnished either nonexpanded or cold expanded at the option of the manufacturer.

Type S:

Seamless Piping - Weldless Pipe Joints It is manufactured from hot-worked steel, if necessary, by subsequent cold-working of the hot-worked tubular product to produce the desired shape, size, and properties.

Grade Group

Grade A:

This is the base grade and is suitable for general low-pressure fluid transfer and some structural applications.

Grade A is preferred when pipes need to be tightly coiled or cold bent.

Grade B:

This is a higher tensile strength and pressure resistance grade than Grade A and is typically used in higher-pressure applications.

ASTM A53 End Finish

Flat End: the ordinary form of the end of the pipe is not processed, applicable to the need for further processing of the situation.
Threaded End: The end of the pipe is processed with threads to facilitate pipe connection.
Beveled End: The pipe end is beveled, and mainly used for welding connections.

ASTM A53 Raw Materials

Steel for seamless and welded pipes should be produced by one or more of these processes:
Open Furnace, Electric Furnace, or Alkaline Oxygen.

Heat Treatment

Welds in Grade B Type E or Type F pipe shall be heat-treated after welding to at least 1000 F [540°C] so that no untempered martensite exists.

Bend Test

DN 50(NPS 2)or smaller: a sufficient length of pipe shall be capable of being bent cold through 90° arounda cylindrical mandrel, the diameter of which is twelve times thespecified outside diameter of the pipe, without developingcracks at any portion and without opening the weld.

Close coiling:the pipe shall stand being bent cold through 180°around a cylindrical mandrel, the diameter of which is eight times the specified outside diameter of the pipe, without failure.

Double-extra-strong pipe over DN 32 (NPS 1 1/4)  not need be subjected to the bend test.

Flattening Test

Welded pipe over DN 50 mm in extra-strong weight or lighter: shall be flattening test.

Seamless Pipe: No testing.

Hydrostatic Test

Plain-End Pipe: Applicable pressure according to Table X2.2.

Threaded and Coupled Pipe: Applicable pressure according to Table X2.3.

Nondestructive Electric Test

If a non-destructive electrical test has been performed, the length shall be labeled with the letters "NDE".

Galvanized

ASTM A53 Galvanized pipe shall be galvanized internally and externally by the hot dip process.

The zinc used for the coating shall be any grade of zinc conforming to Specification B6. The galvanized pipe shall be free from uncoated areas, blisters, flux deposits, and gross dross inclusions. Lumps, projections, globules, or heavy deposits of zinc which will interfere with the intended use of the material will not be permitted.

The surface of the steel pipe shall have a zinc coating of not less than 0.40 kg/m² by calculation of the weight and area of the galvanized coating.

Product Marking

→  Manufacturer's name or logo

→  Specification number

→  Size (NPS and weight class, plan number, or specified wall thickness; or specified outside diameter and specified wall thickness)

→  Grade (A or B)

→  Pipe type (F, E or S)

→  For seamless pipe there are also hydraulic and non-destructive electrical two test items need to pay attention to, if you do which test items, which test will be marked (hydraulic labeling test pressure, non-destructive electrical labeling DNE).
