What is ASTM A335 P92?

ASTM A335 P92 (ASME SA335 P92) is a seamless ferritic alloy steel pipe intended for high-temperature service. UNS designation is K92460.

P92 is a high-chromium martensitic heat-resistant alloy steel containing 8.50–9.50% chromium and alloyed with Mo, W, V, and Nb, which provides excellent high-temperature creep strength, oxidation resistance, and thermal fatigue resistance.

It is widely used in main steam lines, reheat steam lines, superheater and reheater tubes of supercritical and ultra-supercritical power boilers, as well as in high-temperature, high-pressure process piping and critical pressure-retaining components in petrochemical and refining facilities.

Chemical Composition, %
C 0.07 ~ 0.13 N 0.03 ~ 0.07
Mn 0.30 ~ 0.60 Ni 0.40 max
P 0.020 max Al 0.02 max
S 0.010 max Nb 0.04 ~ 0.09

Mechanical Properties

Tensile Properties

Grade Tensile Properties
Tensile Strength Yield Strength Elongation
ASTM A335 P92 90 ksi [620 MPa] min 64 ksi [440 MPa] min 20 % min (Longitudinal)

ASTM A335 specifies the computed minimum elongation values for P92 for each 1/32 in. [0.8 mm] decrease in wall thickness.

Wall Thickness P92 Elongation in 2 in. or 50 mm
in mm Longitudinal
0.312 8 20 % min
0.281 7.2 19 % min
0.250  6.4 18 % min
0.219 5.6 17 % min
0.188 4.8 16 % min
0.156 4 15 % min
0.125 3.2 14 % min
0.094 2.4 13 % min
0.062 1.6 12 % min

Where the wall thickness lies between two values above, the minimum elongation value is determined by the following formula:

E = 32t + 10.00 [E = 1.25t + 10.00]

Where:

E = elongation in 2 in. or 50 mm, %, and

t = actual thickness of specimens, in. [mm].

Hardness Requirements

Grade Tensile Properties
Brinell Vickers Rockwell
ASTM A335 P92 250 HBW max 265 HV max 25 HRC max

For pipes with wall thickness 0.200 in. [5.1 mm] or over, either the Brinell or Rockwell hardness test shall be used.

The Vickers hardness testing shall be made in accordance with Test Method E92.

Flattening Test

The tests shall be conducted on specimens taken from one end of the pipe in accordance with the requirements of Section 20 of ASTM A999.

Bend Test

For pipe whose diameter exceeds NPS 25 and whose diameter to wall thickness ratio is 7.0 or less shall be subjected to the bend test instead of the flattening test.

The bend test specimens shall be bent at room temperature through 180° without cracking on the outside of the bent portion.

Manufacture and Heat Treatment

Manufacturer and Condition

ASTM A335 P92 steel pipes shall be made by the seamless process and shall be either hot finished or cold drawn, as specified.

A seamless pipe is a pipe without welds. In high-temperature and high-pressure environments, seamless pipes can withstand higher internal pressures and temperatures, offer better structural integrity and mechanical properties, and avoid potential defects at the weld seams.

Heat Treatment

P92 pipe shall be reheated for heat treatment and treated in accordance with the requirements.

Grade ASTM A335 P92
Heat Treat Type normalize and temper
Normalizing Temperature 1900 ~ 1975 ℉ [1040 ~ 1080 ℃]
Tempering Temperature 1350 ~ 1470 ℉ [730 ~ 800 ℃]

Certain of the ferritic steels covered by this specification will harden if cooled rapidly from above their critical temperature. Some will air harden, that is, become hardened to an undesirable degree when cooled in air from high temperatures.

Therefore, operations involving heating such steels above their critical temperatures, such as welding, flanging, and hot bending, should be followed by suitable heat treatment.
