What is ASTM A213 T5 Material?

ASTM A213 T5 (ASME SA213 T5) is a low-alloy seamless steel tube containing 4.00–6.00% chromium (Cr) and 0.45–0.65% molybdenum (Mo), offering excellent high-temperature strength and corrosion resistance, and is primarily used in high-temperature, high-pressure equipment such as boilers, superheaters, and heat exchangers.

UNS designation is K41545.

In the ASTM A213 standard, in addition to T5, alloys with the same chromium and molybdenum content include T5b (UNS K51545) and T5c (UNS K41245), differing only slightly in the content of carbon, silicon, and other elements.

Manufacture and Heat Treatment

Manufacturer and Condition

ASTM A213 T5 steel pipes shall be made by the seamless process and shall be either hot finished or cold finished, as specified.

Heat Treatment

T5 steel pipes shall be reheated for heat treatment according to the following methods, and the heat treatment shall be carried out separately and in addition to heating for hot forming.

Some will air harden, that is, become hardened to an undesirable degree when cooled in ạir from high temperatures, particularly chromium-containing steels with chromium of 4% and higher. Therefore, operations that involve heating such steels above their critical temperatures, such as welding. flanging. and hot bending. should be followed by suitable heat treatment.

Appearance and Dimensions

Appearance

ASTM A213 ferritic alloy cold-finished steel tubes shall be free of scale and suitable for inspection. A slight amount of oxidation is not considered scale.

Ferritic alloy hot-finished steel tubes shall be free of loose scale and suitable for inspection.

Dimension

ASTM A213 T11 tubing sizes and wall thicknesses are usually furnished with inside diameters ranging from 3.2 mm to outside diameters of 127 mm, and minimum wall thicknesses from 0.4 mm to 12.7 mm.

Other sizes of T11 steel pipes can also be supplied, provided that all other requirements of ASTM A213 are met.

Hydrostatic or Nondestructive Electric Test

Each tube shall be subjected to the nondestructive electric test or the hydrostatic test. The type of test to be used shall be at the option of the manufacturer, unless otherwise specified in the purchase order.

The ASTM A1016 standard allows the use of non-destructive testing in place of hydrostatic testing.
