What is ASTM A213 T12 Material?

ASTM A213 T12 (ASME SA213 T12) is a low-alloy seamless steel pipe designed for high-temperature service.

Its primary alloying elements are 0.80–1.25% chromium and 0.44–0.65% molybdenum, which classify it as a chromium-molybdenum alloy steel. It is widely used in high-temperature and high-pressure environments such as boilers, superheaters, and heat exchangers.

T12 pipe has a minimum tensile strength of 415 MPa and a minimum yield strength of 220 MPa.

The UNS designation for this grade is K11562.

Manufacture and Heat Treatment

Manufacturer and Condition

ASTM A213 T12 steel pipes shall be made by the seamless process and shall be either hot finished or cold finished, as specified.

Heat Treatment

All T12 steel pipes shall undergo heat treatment.

Permissible heat treatment methods include full or isothermal annealing, normalizing and tempering, or subcritical annealing.

It should be noted that the heat treatment must be carried out separately and in addition to hot forming.

It is permissible to order T12 with a maximum sulfur content of 0.045. The marking shall include the letter "S" following the grade designation, as in T12S.

Flattening Test One flattening test shall be made on specimens from each end of one finished tube, not the one used for the flaring test, from each lot.

Hydrostatic or Nondestructive Electric Test

Each tube shall be subjected to the nondestructive electric test or the hydrostatic test. The type of test to be used shall be at the option of the manufacturer, unless otherwise specified in the purchase order.

The testing methods shall be carried out in accordance with the applicable requirements of Sections 25 and 26 of ASTM A1016.

ASTM A213 T12 tubing sizes and wall thicknesses are usually furnished with inside diameters ranging from 3.2 mm to outside diameters of 127 mm, and minimum wall thicknesses from 0.4 mm to 12.7 mm.

Other sizes of T12 steel pipes can also be supplied, provided that all other requirements of ASTM A213 are met.

Application

 

ASTM A213 T12 alloy steel seamless tubes are primarily used in high-temperature and high-pressure service environments. Typical applications include

1. Superheaters and Reheaters

Used in power plants for superheater and reheater tubes operating under elevated temperatures and pressures.

2. Boiler Tubes

Widely applied as boiler tubes in thermal power stations, waste-heat recovery units, and industrial boilers.

3. Heat Exchangers

Suitable for heat exchanger tubing in the petrochemical and chemical industries due to its good creep resistance and thermal stability.

4. Furnace and Heater Tubes

Installed in refinery furnace coils, heater tubes, and process heaters where oxidation resistance and long-term strength are required.
